Tips to becoming an Multi Award-Winning Wedding DJ

Kings, Queens, and Everyone in Between, welcome to the regal realm of wedding DJing.

I'm Stephanie Rivkin, aka DJ Stephanie Stardust, the queen of Royal Beats, and I'm here to share a few secrets to producing successful weddings and events.

1: The Crown Jewel of Performance

Before we dive into the technicalities, let's talk about the foundation of becoming a standout DJ: a performance background. My journey began with a love for the singing and the stage, where I honed my skills as a performer and show producer. This experience is invaluable when it comes to reading a crowd, engaging guests, and creating an unforgettable atmosphere.

What can you do to be more confident on the mic and djing for strangers?

  • Sing or host karaoke/trivia nights.

  • Take public speaking courses or improv classes.

  • Take a course on MCing

  • Become comfortable and confident in who you are, how you present yourself, and how you speak.

2: Mastering the Art of MCing

Being a DJ is more than just spinning tracks; it's about becoming a master of ceremonies (MC). An MC is the voice of the event, guiding the flow and ensuring everyone is having a great time. To excel as an MC, you need confidence, charisma, and the ability to connect with diverse audiences.

  • Practice your public speaking, work on your cadence and timing, and remember, authenticity is key. People love an MC who is genuine and relatable.

3: The Royal Toolkit – DJing, Lighting, Sound, and More

To be the best, you must know your craft inside and out. I've educated myself on DJing, MCing, lighting, sound, photo booths, graphic design, social media, ai and more to ensure there is nothing I don't know that I need to know. Having this comprehensive knowledge allows you to provide a seamless experience and address any technical issues that may arise. Invest in top-notch equipment and stay updated with the latest trends and technologies in the industry. And don't forget one of the most important parts - know your music! Time and effort goes into learning decades of different genres of music so you can create impressive fusions and transitions that will leave your guests wanting one more song!

4: Elevating Events with Customer Service

This might be the secret sauce to my success: Customer service is the crown jewel of your business. I offer a unique perspective when it comes to detailing, planning, and the production of my events. With a background in hospitality and working with luxury clients, I understand the importance of high expectations. I am down-to-earth and friendly during the planning process, and when it's showtime, I am professional, fun, and on my A-game. Prioritize your clients' needs and desires. This balance is what elevates events from good to extraordinary. You need to wear many hats while maintaining an authentic, yet professional demeanor. Exceed expectations. Anticipate Needs. Be ready for anything to go wrong without letting them see you sweat. Be prepared and organized - don't just be a dj.

5: The Royal Clientele

What is your niche? Mine is weddings. Yours might be weddings, clubs, mitzvahs or something else.

Who is your client avatar and why do you need to know this?

Your client avatar is your vision of your ideal client. You want to find them, and they want to find you! That's why your branding and market messaging need to be aimed at speaking directly to them. Don't send mixed signals.

Ex. My client avatar is a couple seeking a premium, sophisticated, and fun event experience. They value exclusivity, high-quality service, and attention to detail. They are looking for a personalized touch to make their event memorable and unique. This client appreciates professionalism and reliability, and they are willing to invest in the entertainment. I make sure my website copy and social media relays this message for me.

6: Building Authentic Relationships

Network! Let people know that you and your business exist! My favorite clients want me to meet them for drinks and come to their after-parties. They see me as a person who can make their event awesome, and they are excited to have me enjoy myself at their wedding even though I'm working. Building authentic relationships with clients not only enhances their experience but also ensures repeat business and referrals. Be approachable, be fun, and most importantly, be yourself.

7: Personal Branding

Your branding should scream your business' best qualities. From your logo to your social media presence, everything should reflect the essence of your brand. For example: I am versatile and intuitive, able to read people and talk to anybody. I mix a wide variety of music, creating musical fusions that are creative and exciting. I make sure my clients know this about me before they hire me. Your branding should speak for you! This versatility is a key component of my brand, and it should be a cornerstone of yours as well.

8: The Royal Road to Awards

Winning awards is not just about being the best DJ; it's about being the best in every aspect of your business. From your performance to your customer service, from your branding to your technical skills, every detail matters. Seek feedback and continuously strive to improve. Remember, becoming an award-winning wedding DJ is a journey, not a destination.

In the regal world of wedding DJing, the crown goes to those who prioritize the entertainment, deliver exceptional service, and stay true to themselves. With dedication, passion, and a touch of stardust, you too can become an award-winning wedding DJ.

Now, go forth and reign supreme!

Remember, every event you DJ is an opportunity to shine.

Embrace the journey, and may your beats be ever royal.
